BREAKING NEWS: American People Turning Into Ostriches

Partial transcript from CNN's "Reliable Sources" (4/23/06) on a discussion about the media's lack of coverage on the genocide going on in Darfur, Sudan:

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0604/23/rs.01.html
KRISTOF: You know, I must say that newspapers and magazines I think have done a better job in covering this. The people who have really dropped the ball, frankly is television.

KURTZ: And on that point, could that possibly be because the story is kind of depressing? You know, many -- in fact, tens of thousands of people dying and that it's considered a ratings loser?

KRISTOF: I'm sure that's it. But, you know, if we in the media are going to ask for various kinds of special privileges, you know, as we do, then I think we also have to show some kind of special responsibility. And when the "CBS Evening News" last year over the course of the entire year spends two minutes covering genocide while the broadcast networks are averaging 28 minutes covering the Michael Jackson trial, then there is something profoundly wrong.

despite the fact that the michael jackson trial WAS "kind of depressing" in itself, have we really gotten to the point where we're willing to ignore "tens of thousands of people dying" because it's a "ratings loser"?!

disgusting.

THIS JUST IN: St. Anford law students are unaware of low-income urban housing options

Actual transcript of Constitutional Law class:

Prof Con Law: So what is the distinction the Court should use?

Student: Public versus private.

Prof: So is a hotel public?

Student: Yes, a hotel is a public accommodation.

Prof: What about an ambiguous case? Say I'm having a private party at my apartment...but I happen to live in a public housing project. Is that public or private?

Student: You live in a what?

Prof: I live in a housing project.

Student: [stares blankly]

Prof: A. public. housing. project.

Student: [confused] Well...I guess that would depend what the purpose of this project is.

Prof: No, no, not a "project" like a school project or something. I'm talking about The Projects.

Student: [stares blankly]

Dominikimchee: [quietly implodes]

How dark was Plessy?

In the landmark case of Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court gave the ok to "separate but equal" rail cars, leading to decades of legal segregation of white folks and brown folks. As the story went, Homer Plessy was a 30 year old man who was 7/8 white and 1/8 black. He was arrested when he refused to leave the white car of a train. The case was decided in 1896.

We discussed Plessy in Con Law last week and at some point during the class the professor asked what we thought Plessy looked like. As many of my classmates also did, I figured Plessy looked straight-up white. Professor Con Law said we were wrong, and then pulled up this picture:

I was like, "oh snap! Plessy was a brotha!" Given that he was 7/8 white, I had not expected this at all. Like, damn, that one great-grandparent of his must have been dark.

Over the weekend I decided to look for more pictures of Plessy to see if I could get a better view. That grainy headshot was the only picture I could find on all the Plessy websites. But then I found this:

The above picture is clearly not from 1896. This fool's headshot is all over the internet marked as being the famous Homer Plessy, but it's not him! If this guy were really Plessy, he would have to be 80-something years old in this picture.

I emailed Professor Con Law about it, hoping he would show my picture in class today. But he didn't. All he said was, "Ms. Dominikimchee has questioned my picture of Plessy. I'm looking into it."

St. Anford Law Student Completes Black Man Trifecta

Star of the stage. Hero on the football field.... and the H.N.I.C. with the ladies.

St. Anford invested well in this black man. Congragulations, family.

My "heart" is slapping this fool right now

Quote courtesy of the New Yawk Times:

"I have no problem with the demonstration, but this is a business... Couldn't they have protested in their hearts?"
